DonisArt Evenings

Review

DonisArt has officially entered the Cluj-Napoca releam! Because I didn’t really know what to expect in this new city, I relaxed and tried to take things as they came, without constructing expectations, with no simulation or demands! I’ve been to Euphoria Music Hall three months ago, and I liked “its story”, especially since the venue was officially opened to the public a few months before. I had to deal with the same type of snivels as in the case of The Silver Church and Kulturhaus in Bucharest, way back when I announced the first events there: people saying that those venues are not fit for such events, being to glam and lavish for the “true” crowd. I have always been searching for decent locations, elegant, above average, which essentially manage to provide by visual impact, a physical comfort.

Well, Euphoria is something different. Euphoria is a place where everything looks very professional and all is done with the greatest of accountability. The venue’s personnel was very friendly and helpful, therefore I had the distinct feeling, since we’ve arrived at noon that everything is going to be under control. I have to mention that this is the first concert I have organized in DonisArt’s four year history (the 18th to date) where I’ve taken a band off their tour, but I had no other choice. I have been trying for a while now to summon the Japs in Romania, but every time Budapest seemed to be some kind of a dead end for us.

Knowing that the Japanese won’t make it to Europe anytime soon, maybe only next year, after they will be done mixing their new album, I asked the manager to try everything humanly possible not to make us miss this little tour of theirs, especially since the band was willing to play in Romania. I sealed the deal since March, but I’ve patiently waited for their Western Europe tour to end, in order to officially announce the event in Cluj-Napoca. Furthermore, I’ve also been to London, to witness their performance alongside a symphonic orchestra and the experience was astounding.

Let’s go back to the concert. On the 22nd of July, at 2 p.m. we received a SMS which was stating that the band has crossed the boarder and everything was going to be ok. At 6 p.m. they started the sound check, but after they admired the location taking a lot of pictures. We agreed on setting some friendly merchandise rates: 40 lei for a CD and 50 lei for a T-shirt, especially since the ticket price was also frugal – 30 lei.

I’ve heard news from Budapest, about their show on the night before, who managed to attract merely 180 people, keeping in mind that they had RED SPAROWES on board as well. I’ve explained in the June editorial, that I was taking the Americans into account also, but when I wanted, they were a little unsure, and when they finally said “yes”, I already issued the first statement.

Immediately after rehearsal, the Japs asked me about how many people I was expecting that evening. I told them I had no idea (pre-sales aren’t exactly my strong point), but I assured them that those who will show up, are surely true fans. What could I have said, especially since I knew they declined other concert invitations to play here, including another possible show day, lost on the road to Germany where they will be performing at a major festival on the 24th. But the thing is, they really wanted to come, and the universe conspired into that direction.

It was already 9 p.m. so we opened the doors, and ran on the screens the teasers for all the future events. After half an hour there were barely twenty people there.

Some friends were trying to explain to me that it’s July, the collage folks are probably home, people are on vacation, some fans had to attend the Garana Fest. All news were bizarre and reeked of consolation and resignation. No one seemed too interested of the merchandise stand; people were standing relaxed around the tables. I just said to myself: “So be it”, I just hope the band and the fans who did come will have a wonderful time tonight, even though with an empty venue, the acoustics will suffer the consequences!!

After another half an hour, the venue was full…I don’t know how or when it happened, but I found it hard to believe. Well, the venue was full but I still managed to reserve upstairs for the band. About 300 people joined the ranks for the show, coming from different parts of the country just to see MONO. The crowd was very cosmopolite ranging from evil metalheads to Alternative fans, in short people of all ages, all of them behaving very decently. I didn’t receive a lot of requests for accreditations from the press, so I consequently didn’t see more than 4-5 journalists there. Well, a low interest rate for a less know musical genre, I guess…!

After about fifteen minutes, MONO went on stage and carried on a monumental show! 90 minutes of Contemporary Classic Music mixed with Instrumental, Progressive all build on Post-Rock/Experimental structures. There was melancholy, romance and nostalgia in that music, blended with furious and noisy parts, a real explosion of sounds and energies. The light show was suitable, only during the last three songs did it become more ocular so that the fans would enjoy taking their pictures.

Sadly, I noticed that those standing in the back, had not such a great visibility, despite the scene being pretty high above ground. It’s something to keep in mind for future events.

What is there more to say about this concert of rare beauty, about this responsive and civilized crowd who immersed the atmosphere with a sum of positive energies?

I loved that, after the concert, the fans were lining up near the stage to take photos, autographs and talk to the band, especially since it’s a well known fact that the band members don’t excel in this sector. But they had such a good time, they were so happy at the end! You could see how modest and sincere they were with the fans, maybe a little bit fearsome as well…

And they sold so much merchandise after the concert! It’s a record for all the events I have organized so far. I tend to believe that the fans loved the concert!

I’ve seen fans taking home MONO posters from the location’s notice board. If I only knew I would have ordered more posters….even if until now I’ve always had so many left.

The Playlist was diverse, but illuminating for their albums.

“Ashes In The Snow”, “Follow the Map”, “Burial At Sea”, “Pure as Snow”, “Sabbath”, “Halo”, “Moonlight” and “Everlasting Light”. I missed “Yearning” and “The Kidnapper bell” but…it would be wrong to say I am dissatisfied!

All I can say is that I thank you all for this BEAUTIFUL EVENING of the 22nd of July. Everything went by the book!

This was a beautiful experience with a beautiful band for a beautiful crowd: when music speaks without words….MONO!

Comunicat, 21 iulie:

Cand muzica vorbeste fara cuvinte (3)… MONO!

Cand muzica vorbeste fara cuvinte… MONO!

Foarte putine trupe Post-Rock recunoscute mondial au reusit sa concerteze pana acum in Romania!

Japonezii
